If you have not already read the IVOX 'Test My PC' page, please do so now.

The following questions and answers are in an order to try and get you going as quickly as possible:

Q. The presentation appears to start with the message 'Connecting to server' or 'Opening...' but then it says 'Closed' and nothing happens!

Possible Causes:

  • You have a very low speed connection to the Internet

  • You are sharing you internet connection with other users

  • You are doing other things on the Internet (such as collecting email) at the same time as trying to access the conference

  • You have a firewall that is specifically blocking Windows Media access through port 80

Possible Solutions:

  • Press F5 to try re-starting the presentation

  • Check out the IVOX 'Test My PC' page to determine what your Internet connection speed is

  • Try and connect to the Internet with your own dial-up connection using a fast modem

  • Do not use other programs that access the Internet or other websites whilst accessing IVOX

  • Ask your system administrator to let Windows Media in through port 80 on your firewall

Q. The presentation seems to be running but I can't hear anything?

Possible Causes:

  • Your computer doesn't have sound

  • Speaker not switched on or the cable is disconnected

  • Speaker volume control is turned down

  • The Windows Volume Control is either turned down or muted

  • The drivers for your hardware are not (properly) installed

Possible Solutions:

  • Confirm that you can hear other sounds from your computer. If you play a .wav file or .mp3 file can you hear it?

  • In Windows Control Panel, check all sound and multimedia settings - do not change any unless you are not sure what you are doing!

  • In Windows Volume Control check that the Volume Control and Wave Balances are up and not muted

  • Check hardware and drivers for your soundcard - only do this if you are sure what you are doing!

Q. The slides appear to be out of sync!

Most Likely Cause:

  • Your Internet connection is not fast enough to be able to stream the audio and also download the next slide at the same time

Possible Solutions:

  • Connect to the Internet using a faster connection

  • When a slide appears to be out of sequence, click the pause button on the Audio player and wait for 10 seconds or so to let the computer catch up. If are dialling up to the Internet, the connection may be indicated by a pair of computer screens flashing in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. If they are flashing when you have paused the playback, it means that the connection is still busy. Wait untill they stop flashing and then un-pause the presentation.

  • Are you doing something else on the Internet, like collecting email, whilst watching the presentation? Try to avoid this.

Q. I am using a Mac, why can't you support this?

We do, but not directly. Your computer needs to have Windows Media Player on it which you can get at either of:

Version 7.1: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/mac71.aspx

Version 9: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx

The problem for us is that any PC running Windows 95 or later automatically installs whatever it needs to play a presentation, for some reason this just doesn't happen on a MAC, which is why a MAC is not one of our 'recommended' systems.

Q. I am using Netscape, why can't you support this?

Netscape is a problem for us due to the way it handles Windows Streaming Media files, it may work, but if at all possible, please use Internet Explorer 5.1 or later. Netscape is dead anyhow.

Q. I am being prompted to pay for the presentations and I thought they were free?

For certain conferences the presentations are free for delegates. If you attended a conference were the IVOX presentations were free, firstly please check that you are logged in using the same email address that you provided when you registered for the conference. If you are sure this is correct, please outline your problem on our feedback form and we will contact you as soon as possible.

Q. I am not happy about using my credit card online

If you have read our 'worried about using your credit card online?' and are still not happy, please complete our feedback form and we will contact you to discuss alternative payment options.
